  • Preheat your oven to a comfortable 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease your chosen 12-inch oven-safe skillet or a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Pour both cans of cherry pie filling into the bottom of your prepared pan. For a slightly healthier choice, consider using a 'no sugar added' or 'light' cherry pie filling! Stir in the almond extract gently to make sure it's evenly mixed and spread out.
  • Carefully sprinkle the dry chocolate cake mix evenly over the cherry filling layer. Make sure it reaches all the way to the edges – no need to stir this layer in! If you're looking for a healthier option, explore a reduced-sugar or whole-grain chocolate cake mix.
  • Slice the cold butter into thin pats (about 16 pieces) and arrange them evenly over the dry cake mix. These butter pieces will melt down to create a wonderful, golden crust.
  • Place your pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 1 hour. You'll know it's ready when the topping is beautifully golden brown and the cherry filling is bubbly around the edges.
