Equipment

  • Baking Sheet
  • Wire cooling rack
  • Parchment Paper

Ingredients

  • 1 cup salted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg room temperature
  • 3/4 tsp almond extract or vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup colored sugar orange, black, or purple

Instructions

  • Beat the softened butter and sugar together until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes.
  • Mix in the egg and almond extract until well combined.
  • Stir in the flour just until incorporated.
  • Divide the dough in half. On a plastic‑wrap‑covered surface, press each half into an 8‑inch square.
  • Sprinkle patches of colored sugar over the dough. Use the plastic wrap to roll it up tightly like cinnamon rolls, forming a log. Wrap and refrigerate for 1–2 hours until firm.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment.
  • Slice the log into 1/4‑inch rounds and place 2 inches apart on the sheet.
  • Bake 6–8 minutes until edges just turn golden. Cool 1–2 minutes on the sheet, then transfer to a wire rack.
