Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking pan
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Medium Saucepan
  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup Dark Brown Sugar packed
  • 12 ounces Chocolate Chips (such as semi-sweet, milk, or dark)
  • 1 sleeve Saltine Crackers (enough to cover a 9x13 inch baking pan)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Line a 9x13 inch baking pan with aluminum foil, extending it over the sides for easy lifting later. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single, even layer across the bottom of the pan.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and dark brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring gently, until the mixture comes to a full, rolling boil. Continue to boil and stir for exactly 3 minutes.
  • Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the crackers in the prepared pan, making sure to coat them well.
  • Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 7 minutes. The crackers will soak up the buttery toffee, becoming crisp and golden.
  • Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot cracker base. Let them sit for a few minutes to melt from the residual heat.
  • Once the chocolate has softened, use a spatula to spread it smoothly across the entire surface. If you like, add any optional toppings (like chopped nuts or sprinkles) now.
  • Refrigerate the pan for at least 30 minutes, or until the toffee and chocolate are completely set and firm.
  • Once cooled, break the toffee bark into irregular, bite-sized pieces and enjoy your homemade treat!
