Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2/3 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder (Dutch processed for rich flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt
  • 5/8 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter softened
  • 1 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 2 cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips for melting and dipping
  • Festive Sprinkles (optional, for a pop of color)

Instructions

  • Mix Dry INGREDIENTS: In a medium bowl, gently whisk together the flour, rich cocoa powder, and sea salt. Set this aside.
  • Cream Butter & Sugar: In a large mixing bowl (or using a stand mixer), beat the softened butter and sugar until the mixture is beautifully light and fluffy, which usually takes about 3 minutes. Stir in the pure vanilla extract until it's just blended.
  • Combine Wet & Dry: Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing on a low speed until a soft, cohesive dough forms. Be careful not to overmix!
  • Roll Out Dough: Place the dough between two sheets of wax paper. Roll it out evenly to about ¼-inch thickness. This helps create uniform cookies.
  • Chill Time: Transfer the rolled dough (still sandwiched between the wax paper) to the refrigerator and let it chill for at least 30 minutes. This step is crucial for perfectly shaped cookies!
  • Prep for Baking: While the dough chills, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • Shape & Arrange: Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to create your adorable cookies. Carefully place them on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring a little space between each one.
  • Bake to Perfection: Bake the cookies for 15 minutes, or until their edges are crisp and firm.
  • Cool Down: Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then gently transfer them to a wire rack to cool down completely. They need to be fully cool before dipping!
  • Melt Chocolate: While your shortbread hearts cool, melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips. You can do this in a microwave-safe bowl in short 30-second bursts, stirring until smooth, or use a double boiler on the stovetop.
  • Dip & Decorate: Once the cookies are completely cool, dip about a quarter of each heart into the luscious melted chocolate. If desired, immediately sprinkle with festive sprinkles for a lovely Valentine's touch!
  • Set & Enjoy: Place the dipped cookies back on wax paper or parchment paper until the chocolate is fully set and firm. Now, share these delightful homemade treats with your sweetie!
